The Library No. 1 of Neringa town was founded in 1956. Since 1990 the library was called Neringa Town Nida Library. Since January 1, while implementing LR Law on Libraries, the library was reorganized into the Public Library of Neringa Town Municipality with Preila and Juodkrante branches by the decree No. 069 of 18.12.1995 by Neringa Town Municipality Board.
The Public Library of Neringa Municipality includes a subscribers’ department and a reading room. The funds of the Public Library hold over 44 thousands prints on fiction, philosophy, community, natural sciences, history, periodicals, etc. There are also about 500 copies of various prints on the regional studies. These are books and journals containing information about the Curonian Spit, its history, nature and beauty. The subscribers’ department has alphabetic and systematic catalogues. During a year, 14 thousand visitors attend the library. Number of users is about 900. 40 thousand copies of various records per year are given to the readers. In the reading room, about 110 titles of various periodicals, such as the major daily newspaper of the country, weekly newspapers and journals, can be found.
Information on the Curonian Spit
All information on the Curonian Spit is kept in the reading room, at the regional studies file called “The Curonian Spit in Records”. The articles on the Curonian Spit or copies of them are kept in topical binders on regional studies. The information is being gathered and accumulated on the famous people of the land such as: an honorable fellow-countryman professor folklorist L. Reza, greenery-providers for dunes D. G. and G. D. Kuvertas, fishing inspectors V. E. Berboma, also the famous people of Neringa of modern time: a writer and Nida’s chronicler V. Miliunas, an artist E. Jonusas, an artist D. Molyte – Lukauskiene, a poet Dovidaviciute – Pucenia, a German writer T. Mann, honorable citizens of Neringa: an architect A. Zavisas, a physician A. Vinkus and others. The reading room has the general file of articles in periodicals; one can get acquainted with the decisions made by Neringa Municipality Board. The Public Library of Neringa Municipality and its branches regularly organize various exhibitions of prints and other events. Preila and Juodkrante branches of the Public Library of Neringa Municipality also have a wide choice of different books, newspapers and magazines.
