Bird watching routes to explore:
- Seaside from Preila to Pervalka and Juodkrantė to Alksnynė (spot the migration of sandpipers in August and September and sea birds in November and March)
- Lagoon shores from Pervalka to Preila: many water bird species migrate and have their offspring near the lagoon.
A unique path of migration
The skies of the Curonian Spit host one of the most significant bird migration paths of Northern Europe, the bird migration route of the White and Baltic Seas.
An ever popular leisure activity of bird watching is a delight for many nature lovers. One of its most enjoyable parts is to identify the species and numbers of birds - this requires the bird watcher to train his senses well as there are birds that can be recognised, for example, only by the sounds they make. There are several useful devices to help bird watchers: binoculars, telescopes, digital cameras and guide books.
Migration monitoring sites
It is usually most convenient to bird watch on high hills or dunes, bird watching towers and vast open spaces, like the beach and wide fields - you will find plenty of all of these in the Curonian Spit! One of the most known bird watching spots in Neringa is the legendary Dune of Parnidis near Nida.
The spring migration starts in early March with the return of the local species and the last of the birds migrate to their nesting spots in Northern Europe through the Curonian Spit at the end of May.
However, the peak bird watching season in the Curonian Spit is from August to November - the autumn migration. The flocks then are boosted by the newly hatched birds, who join their predecessors travelling to the south, as far as Southern Africa, for winter. There is hardly a sky in North and Central Europe as busy as over the Curonian Spit during this season - a perfect time to admire this natural phenomenon.
The diversity of bird species
During the peak migration, over half a million birds can pass Neringa each day. Among them - many finches, swallows, blackbirds, starlings and others, numerous predator species and huge flocks of ducks, geese and swans. The spring migration offers sightings of buzzards, cranes, curlews and many more.
The true delight for bird watchers is spotting a rare species - Neringa’s sky is a perfect opportunity to spot peregrine falcons, red-footed falcons, red kites and rosy starlings.
